Pilton Green Man Day 2013
The 2013 Pilton Green Man Day was one of the most successful in recent memory, helped enormously by the fantastic weather. Rotary Gardens was particularly popular as it had just been given a 'good haircut' by North Devon Council. Trimming the growth from the bottom of many of the trees opened it up as a brilliant space for festival activities and food stalls. New display boards prepared by North Devon Council and located at the three corners gave visitors the chance to learn about the History of Rotary Gardens and the History of Pilton and to do a Tree Trail.
A successful new Programme was designed by Max Locker of Pilton Community College and printed by Toptown Printers helped by a grant from the District Councillors.
The people of Pilton were invited to create Scarecrows in their gardens and twenty three people came up with some great ideas. Click above to see these while left is the one from the Almshouses. And Pilton's children were invited to make scarecrow cards. Over 400 of them were displayed in the Church Hall on Festival Day. Also in the Church Hall, Pilton Church organised the 'Paint a Masterpiece' Community Project with a stunning reproduction of Holman Hunt's 'Jesus, Light of the World' made up of nearly 200 individual contributions all coloured by hand by visitors on the day (see the result, left, behind the Almshouse scarecrow).
The Pilton Story - Pilton's heritage archive - displayed a selection of its 200 plus old photographs and documents of Pilton Village in the Church Hall Meeting Room. The volunteers spent a busy day talking to Piltonians about their village history.
The Festival Concert of Words and Music, on the theme of 'Myths, Legends and Fables', was held in Pilton Church on the Sunday. Widely considered to have been 'the best one yet' it again raised money for the North Devon Young Musicians Support Group.

Enormous thanks to the residents of Pilton Street who put up with the stalls, visitors and noise for a day. Without their patience it would not be a success. Thanks to the stallholders who worked hard to make it an enjoyable experience for the people who came. And thanks to all those people for having a good time.
Enormous thanks are also due to all those who help with the organisation before, on and after the day - they know who they are - and it's not just the Committee which held it all together!
Getting licences and insurance, assessing risks, managing finances, booking and placing stalls and children's activities, organising and distributing programmes, sorting out waste and toilets, putting up and running the Green Man beer tent (part of team shown left) and the Pimms tent, erecting and running 
four stages of music (part of team shown left), booking street performers, organising the parade and the pageant, dealing with public address and making announcements, organising scarecrows and cards, all that different music, history tours and concert in Pilton Church, & creation of the Hall painting.
And thanks, too, to Devon & Cornwall Police, for policing the parade and being around Pilton on the day, to Pilton House, particularly for the use of their lawn for the Pageant, to Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue, for doing the street bunting, to the Church Hall Committee for the use of the Hall and to St Mary's Church - and, indeed, to anyone else we have forgotten.
